Lionel 1970 Southern Pacific LTD Set (Sealed) - SOLD

Price: $275.00

Mfg #: Lionel 6-1970

2013 Greenburg Price Guide: $365.00 (Mint)

This Southern Pacific Limited "Collector Series" boxed set was manufactured by Lionel in 1979. It is one in a series of sets that was made between 1978 and 1992. All were easily identified by their bright solid color boxes, in all the colors of the rainbow. This set is still factory sealed, and it is getting harder and harder to find such sealed sets.

The set is comprised of:

  • Lionel 8960 & 8961 Southern Pacific U36C diesel pair (powered & dummy) (Lionel 6-8960 & 6-8960)
  • Lionel 9313 Gulf Oil 3-dome tank car (Lionel 6-9313)
  • Lionel 9315 Southern Pacific gondola (Lionel 6-9315)
  • Lionel 9316 Southern Pacific bay window caboose (Lionel 6-9316)
  • Lionel 9320 Fort Knox Gold Reserve Mint car (Lionel 6-9320)
  • Lionel 9732 Southern Pacific box car (Lionel 6-9732)
  • Lionel 9881 Rath Packing reefer (Lionel 6-9881)

Both diesel units feature interior lighting, die-cast, six-wheel trucks, with metal rails and a stamped metal chassis. The powered unit features a powerful Pullmor motor with traction tires. The multi-colored prototypical Southern Pacific graphics have remained very popular over the past 26+ years making these units very desirable, while at the same time being hard to find.

All of the cars (except the caboose) roll on all metal working sprung trucks featuring metal wheels & axles. The caboose is illuminated and has die-cast trucks. All cars have operating magnetic knuckle couplers at both ends.

Note: The additional photos below, of the individual items, are “file photos” since the set for sale is sealed.
