Lionel 1579 Milwaukee Road F-3 SS Set (Mint)

Price: $389.95

Mfg#: Lionel 6-1579

Mfg'd: 1975

2014 Greenburg Guide Price: $410 (Mint)

This Milwaukee Road “Service Station F-3 Special” set was manufactured by Lionel in 1975, the fifth year in this long running series. Beginning in 1971 Lionel began the series, manufacturing a set each year for distribution only by their service/repair stations. The series ended in the mid 90’s.

This set is headed by a pair of Milwaukee Road F-3 diesels, a powered and a dummy. Both are lighted and a powerful Pullmor motor drives the powered “A”. The rolling stock in the set all feature operating magnetic couplers at both ends, and the caboose is lighted. The set contains:

  • Lionel 8555 Milwaukee Road F-3 Powered A-unit (6-8555)
  • Lionel 8557 Milwaukee Road F-3 Dummy A-unit (6-8557)
  • Lionel 9119 Detroit & Mackinac Covered Quad Hopper (6-9119)
  • Lionel 9132 Libby’s Vat Car (6-9132)
  • Lionel 9169 Milwaukee Road Caboose (6-9169)
  • Lionel 9754 NYC Pacemaker Box Car (6-9754)
  • Lionel 9758 Alaska Box Car (6-9758)

All of the components of this set are "factory fresh", Mint condition, “never-been-on-the–tracks”.  The outer set box has some yellowing commensurate with its nearly 40-year age. The individual component boxes are in Like New condition, again with some yellowing due to age.

Additional notes about the F-3s; they are the last that that Lionel made with “nose-decals”.  Given their age, while there is some cracking and a few flakes – the noses are in near perfect shape. That said – this set comes with a replacement pair of nose decals, should the buyer elect to replace the original decals with the replacements.  Also at the end of 1975 Lionel manufactured a dummy B-unit for this AA pair (available separately from the set). The dummy is numbered 6-8575 and is also available for sale on this site.
