This Erie Lackawanna "Collector Series" boxed set was manufactured by Lionel in 1984. It is one in a series of sets that was made between 1978 and 1992. All were easily identified by their bright solid color boxes, in all the colors of the rainbow. This set is “partially” factory sealed, and it is getting harder and harder to find such sealed sets. It appears that the original owner opened the factory cellophane just enough to inspect the diesel engine. None of the other rolling stock appears to have been ever removed from the box. As a result we have used “file photos” for the rolling stock, but we inspected, tested (with alligator clips), and photographed the SD-40 diesel. The set is comprised of:
The diesel features two powerful Pullmor motors, 6 wheel drive, magne-traction, die cast metal wheels and trucks, diesel horn, headlights, illuminated number boards, electronic "e-unit" (forward-neutral-reverse), and excellently detailed cab & handrails. The factory interior packaging of the SD-40 diesels in 1984 left much to be desired; and as such the SD-40 diesels from the early-80s are commonly found today with hairline stress fractures at the mounting screws. We have taken individual photos of each of these superficial flaws (and reduced our asking price accordingly). All of the cars, except for the caboose and crane car, roll on all metal working sprung trucks featuring metal wheels & axles. All have magnetic knuckle couplers at both ends, The caboose is illuminated and has die-cast trucks. The crane car is fully functional (360 degree boom raises and lowers, as does the cabled hook at the end of the boom). It features die-cast six wheel trucks. All individual component set boxes (the orange and blue ones) are in “factory fresh”/Mint condition. Note: We have posted archived "File Photos" of the individual cars, so you can better see each car. Since the set is sealed - pictures of the actual car you will receive could not be taken.
