This Black Diamond Set was manufactured by Lionel in 1987. It is a "Ready to Run" boxed set, with an oval of O-27 track and transformer. Headed by a Lehigh Valley GP-9 diesel that features dual maintenance-free motors, operating headlight, operating knuckle couplers and forward-neutral-reverse operation. The set also contains 4 freight cars, each with operating knuckle couplers, metal wheels and axles. The set contains: #18800 Lehigh Valley GP-9 Diesel #16305 Lehigh Valley Ore Car #16501 Lehigh Valley Illuminated Caboose #16608 Operating Searchlight Car #16609 Operating Derrick Car Of particular interest is the #16305 Lehigh Valley Ore Car (see "file photo" at bottom). It is a rare and valuable component to an entry level set that would normally not contain anything “collectible”. The humble little line of “ore cars” began in 1984, and were instantly popular, collectible and regular catalogue items in subsequent years. In 1987 Lionel made the #16305, but it was only available in this set, and as such, relatively few were made. You will frequently see a price of from $100-$150 on this car. The set is factory sealed and is in "factory fresh" condition (i.e. "Mint", "brand new", "never been on the tracks or displayed") and as such comes with the original set box inserts, track, transformer and paperwork.
